The OPC present at the Institution of Rail Operators (IRO)

Posted on 2nd March 2017

On the 21st February 2017 one of our Occupational Psychologists, Dr Stephen Fletcher, presented to the Institute of Rail Operators (IRO) Midlands branch on the topical subject of ‘Non-Technical Skills: Fad or Aid?’

The presentation took place in Birmingham and was hosted by London Midland at their Academy.

The presentation explored what NTS are all about, how they differ from technical skills and what impact they can have on improving safety performance within safety critical organisations in general and the rail industry in particular. Specific NTS were then explored in more detail and delegates had the opportunity to take part in some interactive and fun exercises that were well received. This included the completion of a mock personality questionnaire that measured four key safe personality characteristics that have been linked to safe behaviour at work.

Thanks to Rachel Heath and Patrick Fahey for the kind invitation and to the IRO delegates for their appreciation. If you would like to know more about Non-Technical Skills and how they can help your organisation to improve safety performance then please contact us at the OPC.

As a follow-up Steve was featured in an article titled ‘Non-Technical Skills: Fad or Aid?’ for Bulletin (May2017).
