New Guest Writer article explores wellbeing as a continuum (June 2026)

Posted on 8th June 2026

The OPC's Lead Business Psychologist, Iffath Ahmed, has contributed the latest Guest Writer article for Rail Business Daily, exploring why workplace wellbeing should be viewed as an ongoing journey that extends beyond responses to a crisis.

Titled Preparing people, supporting people, helping people recover, the article draws on insights from more than one thousand Post-Incident Assessments (PIAs) and interviews undertaken by OPC psychologists with railway employees involved in safety incidents.

The piece examines how the factors that influence employee wellbeing are often present long before a significant event occurs. It highlights the importance of supporting people at every stage of their career journey, from recruitment and training through to development, recovery and ongoing support.

Drawing on examples including the OPC's Access Training programme, Learn-to-Learn workshops, post-incident work and the recently enhanced Dealing with Trauma workshop, the article explores how organisations can help people build confidence, self-awareness and resilience. It also considers the role of psychological safety and supportive leadership in creating environments where employees feel able to speak up, learn and seek support when they need it.

"People are rarely defined by a single moment. What often makes the difference is the support they receive, the insights they gain and their ability to learn and move forward."

Iffath Ahmed - Lead Business Psychologist, the OPC

The article is part of the OPC's ongoing contributions to industry discussions around employee wellbeing, safety and performance.
